Sam Howell helped found Friends of the Locust Fork River in 1991. He helped to win the “dam fight”, and he continues to work tirelessly for the river. After serving as president for a decade, he continues as a board member.

Sam Howell works to hear all sides, open dialogue, and build consensus. He has a special interest in issues pitting environment vs. economy.  He serves as a liaison between FLFR and the paddling community, and leads FLFR volunteers in preservation efforts.  He has lived on the river’s banks for close to 30 years, and paddled his kayak solo from those banks to the Gulf (about 500 miles). His many hobbies include paddling, camping, collecting music, gardening and cooking. For untold issues of The River’s Voice newsletter he has contributed Locust Fork Yacht Club Creek Bankin’ Recipes – all tasty and many with tall tales to back em’ up. Professionally, he worked in many capacities for Bresco, Inc. for 34 years. He is now retired.
